The Vancouver E-Prix is an upcoming motorsport event, which was set to be held for the first time on 2 July 2022 as part of the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] The Vancouver E-Prix would be the second attempt for FE to secure a permanent round in Canada, after two races in Montreal in 2017.[2]
The 2022 Vancouver E-Prix would ultimately be cancelled on 23 April, due to a dispute with the promoters and the city council about permits to host the event.[3]
City History[]
The territory around modern Vancouver was initially settled by Aboriginal tribes upwards of 10,000 years ago, with various tribes living in the area through to the arrival of explorer José María Narváez of Spain in 1791.[4] In 1808 Simon Fraser led a group of European traders to the future site of Vancouver, creating a temporary base to expand the influence of the North West Company.[4]
Gold and Colonialism: 1800s - 1920s[]
1858 saw an en-masse move of over 25,000 people to the area around Vancouver, sparked by the Fraser Gold Rush, although it was not until 1862 that a permanent settlement in the current site of the city was made.[4] A sawmill became the heart of the fledgling city's economy, and would begin a steady expansion of the town's influence.[4] In 1870 the emerging town was named Granville, and later became the terminus for the planned Canadian Pacific Railway, courtesy of the natural harbour formed by the Fraser River.[4]
On 6 April 1886 the town of Granville was incorporated into city status on 6 April 1886, with Canadian Pacific Railway president renaming the new city as Vancouver, in honour of George Vancouver, a British Royal Navy officer who was prominent in mapping the north western coast of North America.[4] By 1911 the population of Vancouver had grown to 100,000, largely fuelled by the various people hoping to gain through a variety of Gold Rushes, although the railway would provide most of the city's wealth.[4] This led to various major strikes as labour movements moved to combat the major industries within Vancouver in the early to mid 1900s.[4]
Modern Movements: 1920s - Present[]
Vancouver became the epicentre of the feminist movement in Canada, with Mary Ellen Smith becoming the first woman to be elected to the Canadian Provincial Legislature in 1918.[4] Vancouver would also, however, be at the heart of anti-Asian revolt in the build-up towards the Second World War, with various Asiatic communities expelled from Vancouver after the Attack on Pearl Harbour.[4] After the Second World War new movements developed, with Greenpeace notably founded in the city in 1969.[4]
Indeed, Vancouver would begin to emerge as a cultural hub in Canada prior to and after Canada's full independence from Britain via the Canada Act of 1982, notably hosting the 1954 Commonwealth Games.[4] The city also went on to become the third largest metropolitan area within Canada, while over 50% of the current population are from minority groups, making the City the most diverse in North America.[4]
Formula E History[]
The Vancouver E-Prix was announced on the provisional calendar for the 2021/22 season on 8 July 2021, having been touted as a potential host for the Series the previous year.[1] It was later revealed that the 2022 E-Prix would be the climax of a three-day festival dubbed the Canadian E-Fest, which was to see a variety of events to promote sustainable projects and programmes in Vancouver.[5] However, in April 2022, following a lack of progress in negotiations between the promoters of the event and the local city council, the 2022 Vancouver E-Prix was cancelled and the event postponed, provisionally, to the 2022/23 season.[3]
Circuit History[]
The inaugural Vancouver E-Prix was to be staged on a variant of the Moulson Indy Vancouver circuit, which had, in various evolutions, hosted the CART/IndyCar/Champ Car series between 1990 and 2004.[6] Renamed as the Vancouver Street Circuit, the circuit would be based on the shore of False Creek in the heart of Montreal, with the start/finish straight and pitlane on Pacific Boulevard.[6]
