The Venturi VM200-FE-01 was an all-electric, single-seater, racing car developed for the 2015/16 FIA Formula E Championship, which was used by the Venturi Formula E Team and Dragon Racing.[1] Developed by Venturi Automobiles after commissioning McLaren Applied Technologies to redevelop their original Spark-Renault SRT_01E design, the VM200-FE-01 would claim a single victory at the 2016 Mexico City ePrix, as customer team Dragon Racing outscored the factory Venturi effort acorss the campaign.[2]
Competitive History[]
With four examples on the grid for the 2015/16 FIA Formula E Championship season opener, hopes were high for the VM200-FE-01's debut at the 2015 Beijing ePrix, with the Dragon Racing pair of cars finishing just shy of the podium in fourth and fifth.[3] In Putrajaya it was the factory car of Stéphane Sarrazin which finished highest, before Jérôme d'Ambrosio claimed the car's first pole position and first podium at the 2015 Punta del Este ePrix, a race which also saw Jacques Villeneuve destroy one of the factory cars and sit-out the race.[4] Another leading midfield performance for the VM200-FE-01 would follow at the 2016 Buenos Aires ePrix, before d'Ambrosio scored the car's maiden victory at the 2016 Mexico City ePrix from pole position, albeit after Lucas di Grassi was disqualified from the race.[2]
Sarrazin was the next VM200-FE-01 pilot to taste champagne, claiming second and challenging throughout for victory at the 2016 Long Beach ePrix, and would continue his scoring streak at the Paris and Berlin ePrix.[5] That streak would then come to an end at the 2016 London ePrix I, although d'Ambrosio and Mike Conway would score, before d'Ambrosio rounded out the VM200-FE-01's campaign with third place at the season ending 2016 London ePrix II, with Dragon Racing in fourth on 143 points, while the factory Venturi team secured sixth.[6]
Development History[]
Having signed up to be a manufacturer for the 2015/16 season, Venturi Automobiles would opt to commission McLaren Applied Technologies and Hewland, the principle constructors of the Spark-Renault SRT_01E powertrain design to refine their concept.[7] McLaren would produce uprated eMotors and inverters for the VM200-FE-01, a that was based on the McLaren P1 motors and slightly different from the design it supplied to Mahindra, while Hewland would develop a three-speed gearbox which focus on lightness and a new casing.[7] Both designs were commissioned by Venturi, who supplied the designs to McLaren and Hewland rather than take what was supplied by both companies.[8]
The VM200-FE-01 would prove to be the average point in the field during testing, and would particularly demonstrate strong one-lap pace and good pace later in its race-runs at the 2015 Donington Test.
