Yann Ehrlacher (born 4 June 1996 in Mulhouse, Alsace, France) is a French racing driver who worked as a test driver for the Maserati MSG Racing team during the 2023/24 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] A two-time World Touring Car Cup Champion and winner in various other touring car series, Ehrlacher would initially make his FE bow during the 2022/23 season, testing for DS Penske before switching to their sister team Maserati ahead of season ten.[2]
Background[]
Ehrlacher would begin his career in unusual fashion, first starting in racing in 2012 in a Mitjet car, with several standout displays resulting in him getting enough backing to enter the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup in 2013, a series he would compete in through to the end of 2014.[3] With funding from his uncle, touring car ace Yvan Muller, Ehrlacher would make a championship winning campaign in the Championnat de France de Supertourisme in 2015, winning almost half of the season's races.[3] 2016 saw Ehrlacher move in the European Le Mans Series in the LMP3 class, driving for his uncle's team, a programme he would repeat in 2017, while also entering the final edition of the World Touring Car Championship in what proved to be its final season that year.[3]
Touring Topper: 2018 - Present[]
Ehrlacher would remain in the WTCC as it became the World Touring Car Cup in 2018, picking up two victories en-route to tenth in the Championship hunt, which would be enough for him to pick-up a factory seat with Geeley-Volve for 2019.[3] That campaign saw Ehrlacher improve to ninth in WTCC, while also making appearances in ELMS in the LMP3 class, before spending the winter driving in the Andros Trophy, finishing third in his class.[3] In 2020 Ehrlacher would then emerge as a name to watch in touring cars, with three victories in the COVID-19 Pandemic distrupted season seeing the Frenchman end the year as Champion, defeating his uncle by 39 points come the end fo the campaign.[3]
2021 saw Ehrlacher defend his crown in the WTCC, claiming a further two wins, before slipping to ninth in 2022 as he attempted to defend his crown in what proved to be the final edition of the WTCC, in a season heavily disrupted by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.[3] For 2023 Ehrlacer moved with the factory Volvo squad to compete in the TCR World Tour, where he would finish as runner-up, while also making appearances in various other TCR series including the European, Italian and South American equivalents which were also rounds of the World Tour.[3] A repeat campaign would follow in 2024, although Ehrlacher would only manage to secure fifth despite winning the same number of races as he had in the previous campaign.[3]
Formula E History[]
Ehrlacher was offered a seat with DS Penske during the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, where the Frenchman was signed to drive in the Rookie Free Practice session at the 2023 Rome E-Prix I.[2] Taking over the #1 car of Stoffel Vandoorne for the session, Ehrlacher would set the fifth fastest tim eof the session, six tenths off of the ultimate pace, but was interested in completing more running in an FE car in the future.[4] The result was a deal signed with DS' sister team, Maserati MSG Racing to work for them as a test driver during the 2023/24 season, with Ehrlacher set to make his testing debut for them at the 2023 Valencia Test as their designated rookie driver.[1]
Ultimately outside issues meant that the session that Ehrlacher was planned to run in was cancelled, although Maserati did promise to run the Frenchman again if the opportunity arose later during the campaign.[1] That chance came at the 2024 Misano E-Prix I, where FE would host another rookie free practice session, with Ehrlacher setting the ninth fastest time at the wheel of Jehan Daruvala's #18 Maserati.[5]
