Ye Yifei (born 16 June 2000 in Xi'an, Shaanxi, China) is a Chinese racing driver who served as a test driver during the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship for the Porsche Formula E Team.[1] A Euroformula Open Championship and European Le Mans Series Champion, Ye would get his first taste of FE at the behest of Porsche, who signed the Chinese driver to their factory driver roster in October 2021, and would make his FE bow at the 2023 Rookie Test.[1]
Background[]
Ye began his career karting in his native China, and would move to Europe in 2013, culminating in a run in the WSK Super Masters Series in 2015.[2] 2015 also saw Ye graduate to single-seaters with campaigns in the French F4 and Italian F4 Championships, although it was in the Chinese youth's sophomore season that he truly came to the fore, sweeping to the French F4 title with fourteen wins.[2] The 2017 season saw Ye move up to the Formula Renault Eurocup and NEC, and would again take until the Chinese pilot's second campaign in those series for him to reach notable success, ending the 2018 Eurocup in third.[2]
Sporting Switch: 2019 - Present[]
For 2019 Ye would open his season with a run to second in the F3 Asian Winter Series, before a quiet run in the FIA Formula 3 Championship to twenty-first place with only four points.[2] The Euroformula Open Championship would serve as Ye's entertainment for 2020, and the Chinese racer would sweep to a second junior title, winning the series at a canter with eleven victories.[2] Yet, rather than continue in single-seaters Ye made the jump to sportscars in 2021, and duly scooped the titles in the European and Asian Le Mans Series, with those efforts earning him an offer from Porsche Asia to join their factory driver roster in October 2021.[2]
Ye would attempt to defend his ELMS crown in 2022 following a switch to Cool Racing, but ultimately fell to fifth without taking a race win, while also failing to defend his title in ALMS after switching to the GT class.[2] Regardless, 2023 saw Ye offered a seat in the Hypercar class in the World Endurance Championship, with the Chinese racer linking up with António Félix da Costa at Hertz Team Jota for a campaign in the WEC in a customer Porsche.[2]
Formula E History[]
Ye was offered his debut in an ABB FIA Formula E World Championship car by the Porsche Formula E Team, with the German marque placing him in one of their factory cars at the 2023 Rookie Test alongside David Beckmann.[1] Using fellow Jota Sport pilot António Félix da Costa's #13 Porsche 99X Electric Gen 3 for the day, Ye would end the day half a tenth off of his temporary German teammate, although both would be down on laps compared to the rest of the field after Porsche limited their running.[3]
