Zane Maloney (born 2 October 2003 in Bridgetown, Saint Michael, Barbados) is a Barbadian racing driver, who served as a test driver for Avalanche Andretti Formula E during the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.[1] A rising star of the FIA Formula 3 and FIA Formula 2 Championships, Maloney would create history as the first Carribean born driver to take part in an official FE session, having made his FE debut at the 2023 Rookie Test in April 2023.[1]
Background[]
Maloney began his career in karting in the age of twelve, competing initially in North America before moving to Europe to compete in the various European and later World Championships.[2] In 2019 the Barbadian pilot graduated to single seaters by entering the British F4 Championship, and would go on to claim the title in his rookie season with ten victories.[2] In 2020 Maloney secured a move into the Euroformula Open Championship, picking up two podium finishes en-route to eighth in a heavily disrupted season.[2]
A Barbadian Bet: 2021 - Present[]
For 2021 Maloney would secure a seat in the Formula Regional European Championship, and duly went on to claim a historic first victory for a Barbadian driver in any race at Monte Carlo, which aided him to claim fourth in the Championship.[2] Finishing fourth in FREC, Maloney was offered a test and later signed with the Trident Racing FIA Formula 3 Championship squad for 2022, and would complete an impressive rookie campaign in F3, ending the campaign as runner-up to Victor Martins.[2][3] That result saw Maloney's impressive trajectory continue, with the Barbadian pilot securing a seat in the FIA Formula 2 Championship with Trident for the 2022 season finale, prior to signing with Carlin for a full F2 campaign in 2023.[2]
Formula E History[]
Maloney was first approached to drive an ABB FIA Formula E World Championship car during the 2022/23 season, when Avalanche Andretti offered him a seat in one of their cars for the 2023 Rookie Test in Berlin, Germany.[1] Running in Jake Dennis' #27 Porsche, Maloney would be one of the stars of the day as he finished third fastest and just a tenth off of the ultimate pace, earning him another run with Andretti in Free Practice for the 2023 Rome E-Prix I.[4][5]
